Do you have a bare wall in your home that is in desperate need of some decoration, but you’re currently lacking inspiration (and budget)? I did. It was a space that I’d been umming and aahing over for almost a year before I decided to stop procrastinating and actually get the job done.
The bare wall I speak of is in my spare bedroom above the bed. The room is not as frequented as others in my home, but still, it has always niggled me that it wasn’t aesthetically complete. To decorate the wall, I considered the usual suspects: a large mirror, a canvas print artwork (Ikea has some great ones for the budget-conscious) a fancy bed head, but I thought it would be fun to create something my self.
One idea was to create a wall hanging by draping a gorgeous panel of fabric over some dowel, with ribbon or fishing line tied to the ends to hang it up. Another was to cut a silhouette of a bed head out of an MDF board and paint it to coordinate with the bedcovers (intermediate handy-person skills required for this one).
Eventually, I ended up going down the framing route. Not pictures though – 3D letters. I found some nickel-plated letters in a vintage store and mounted them in box frames (you can get these from stockists such as Spotlight or Corban & Blair). They’re a bit different, a cinch to create, plus, you can personalise the letters to spell out whatever you like. I chose JOY, because that’s what I feel every time I come home.
The only problem is, now I’ve started analysing everything else for framing potential. It’s become somewhat of an obsession. I wonder if you could box-frame a cutlery set… it would look perfect in the kitchen.
