Reno rule no 2: Keep on the ball

Friday
There’s one important thing I have learned about renovating – it’s too easy to become slack. And that’s what I’ve done: I’ve slacked off.

It gets too easy to just live around the dust and tools instead of doing anything to improve the condition of the house. At this very point in time, I step over large plumbing pipes to get to the bathroom, around tools, and I never put anything on the floor because it’s still covered in concrete dust that I can’t get rid of.

And yet, somehow I’ve been (un)comfortably living around it for months. Instead of doing anything, it becomes too easy not to. Why mess up the current living conditions for something worse?

Yes, I admit that the current living conditions are pretty bad, but doing anything will mean I have to move around furniture and further disrupt the balance. Plus, it’s winter and who wants to work in winter? Sitting in front of the heater is much more fun. Besides, I can’t paint until my brother has finished the bathroom and laundry because there will be a whole big mess when that job is done. Then I got the news that my brother had an accident at work. He broke his foot in two places and that put him out of action too. At least there was an excuse for my laziness. I was waiting for his foot to heal.

And that’s my point. Stay on the ball because once you fall off it’s very difficult to get back on.

  • I have to wholeheartedly agree with you on this one! My wife and I have been renovating since June last year and you are right - you get used to tools all over the laundry bench, a ladder leaning up against the wall in the entry hall, dust over everything in the study and half finished work in the front yard and back. It is even at the point where I look at the fresh plaster board work in the lounge room with the semi-finished joins and it is a feature wall in its own right!
