Renovation Rule No 1: Never rely on a family member
Friday
Rule number 1 of renovations: Never, ever rely on a family member. Plenty had said it to me before I figured that couldn’t be the case for my family. Besides, why should my money go to a stranger when instead it could be going to somebody I was close to? Because a stranger was more likely to keep promises, that’s why.
My laundry-to-be sat as a rock pool. The smell of blue metal dissipated, and every day my hopes of the rock pool becoming the much desired laundry faded. And yet I still waited for my brother to come and magically transform the rock pool into a room that had a toilet, a shower, a laundry tub, and, oh joy, my own washing machine. I eagerly awaited the day I’d no longer have to hoard my washing in enviro bags and send them to my mother to be washed, folded and returned (wait, I must be going mad, the chemicals are getting to my brain... did I really say that? Yes, enjoy it while it lasts).
One day became one week. One week became one month. One month became 4 months, and I’m still waiting. Lesson learned. It’s probably time to get somebody else...

Unfortunately your lesson also extends to people who actually live in the house with you. There's a reason why the cobbler's children have broken shoes. I have a friend whose partner is a plumber - he got as far as knocking a hole in the external wall of their shower then stopped. The shower still worked but for over a year there was a gaping hole. It meant that my friends could look into the neighbour's house whilst showering, but she was well aware that the opposite was also true. Good luck!
