The aftermath

Tuesday
Having survived the night after the attempted break-in unscathed, I had police over the next morning to do fingerprinting. I have to hand it to the would-be thief - at least he had the sense to wear gloves. But that left me in a strange place: what do I do now? I asked the policewoman a question I never dreamed I’d ever have to ask: If I get home and somebody’s in the house, or if somebody gets into the house while I’m there, what can I do to them? The response – “Anything it takes to make you feel safe, although you’d be best off to lock yourself in the bathroom and call the police”.

Therefore, and I probably shouldn’t admit to this here, there is now a butcher’s knife in my shower, another one under the toaster, hedge clippers under my couch in the living room, a screwdriver on my bedside table, and various weapons, I mean well placed tools, scattered around my house.

But more had to be done. I’d always had grand plans for security, but believed that I wouldn’t need to worry about it until after I’d finished renovating since there was nothing worth taking. Now it was clear that wasn’t the case anymore, I decided that I should at least put an alarm system in and definitely do something about getting the yard cleaned up and the excess rubble and mess taken away.

Lesson to renovators: Don’t believe that because your house is mid-renovation nobody will want to break in.

  • I think if anything, you should feel more empowered then scared that someone broke in, I mean this is your families home, if ever there were a time to get primal, and territorial, and empowered, It's NOW Josephine!
