Wildflower drapes

Thursday
Wildflowers enchant me. Living directly across from an area of bushland that is as dramatic as it is beautiful in the September wildflower season, I cannot but feel a shiver of excitement as I learn of the launch of West Australian Jude Taylor’s Fabric and Wallpaper Collection entitled simply ‘Wildflowers’.

Though the exhibition is housed in a tin shed at the back of the rustic Art and Coffee House, the initial impression is anything but ordinary. Billowing fabric prints hang theatrically from the ceiling. Native flower arrangements are styled to compliment the artwork. Colours are diverse…some vivid, others sensuous, all appealing. There is an earthy opulence that is breath taking.

Jude Taylor has been producing lino-cut prints of Western Australian wildflowers for over 20 years. Only lately has she extended these prints to repeat patterns on textiles and wall papers, spending time in India and Indonesia to study their ancient art of block and screen-printing. Native flowers highlighted in her exhibition are Banksia, Hakea, Kangaroo Paw and the Shark Bay Rose.

Local foodie personality and long-time friend to Jude, Kate Lamont, opened the exhibition. She spoke of passion, of following your heart and having the courage of your convictions.

I think of her words and muse over their relevance in the context of house building, decorating and more fundamentally… living.

Wine in hand, I wander around captivated, wishing my interiors budget were larger. No matter. September is coming and I plan to spend a lot of time across the road.
